One Ohio Now Testimony before the Full Ohio House Finance Committee

Andrea Fejes, coordinator for One Ohio Now, testified before the full House Finance Committee. One Ohio Now called on the legislature to consider a balanced approach to the state's revenue crisis. This includes reviewing and reducing the more than $7 billion the state gives up every year in tax loopholes. These tax breaks, credits and deductions are simply spending by another name. Unlike appropriations, however, tax loopholes are put in place and some have not been reviewed in decades. There is no way of knowing if they are achieving the intended goals.

Medicaid Teach-In Presentation by Dr. Bill Hayes

Ohio faces an unprecedented challenge in the upcoming budget. The economy is still weak and Ohio’s revenues continue to fall below what’s required to meet people’s rising needs.

In its next two-year budget, our state faces a record shortfall of up to $8 billion. As one of the largest expenditures in the state budget, Medicaid will most likely be viewed as a potential area for savings during the budget process.

One Ohio Now held a teach-in to brief stakeholders on Medicaid basics and challenges in the budget. The presentation below was given by Dr. Bill Hayes, a former director of the Health Policy Institute of Ohio. Dr. Hayes gave an overview of the program that provides health coverage for low-income families, children, pregnant women and people who are aged, blind or who have disabilities as well as the role of Medicaid in Ohio’s economy.
