Fixing problems
Ohio needs to invest in the fundamentals – infrastructure, great public schools, and healthy communities – to build an economy that works for everyone. Governor DeWine inherited a billion dollar pothole in our state transportation budget, and he proposed a solution to that problem. I am excited to see that new revenue is finally on the table, which will provide a way to address Ohio’s most pressing needs. In the weeks to come, I am hopeful that the Ohio legislature will practice financial common sense by including revenue as a part of the solution to Ohio’s most pressing needs.
Investing in Ohio’s Future
Governor DeWine’s State of the State address advocated for investing in Ohio’s future. Ohio ranks poorly on many health indicators and middle of the pack at best on indicators surrounding education. We know that healthy and well-educated Ohioans are important components to building a strong economy that works for everyone. While his words are promising, the budget – and legislative leaders – must follow suit by making the needed investments to strengthen our schools, create healthy communities, and support reliable infrastructure. Governor DeWine’s gas tax proposal was a cautious first step toward addressing Ohio’s other big problems. I hope the Governor and Legislature will consider additional revenue to fund our public schools and social service programs at appropriate and reasonable levels so that we are investing in the foundation of Ohio’s future.
Fair Share
As the debate begins on Ohio’s two year budget, a few things should be kept in mind. First, we need to invest in the fundamentals of a strong economy that works for everyone— infrastructure, great public schools, and healthy communities. We also need to look at who is paying for our services. For the past 8 years the state has cut resources for local communities, cut taxes for the wealthiest Ohioans, and increased the tax load on hardworking families struggling to get by. With billions less to invest into great public services that strengthen our communities, Ohio continues to struggle to make much needed investments. The Ohio legislature should consider closing unwarranted tax loopholes, modernizing our tax code, and targeted investments through the Earned Income Tax Credit to help families struggling to get by. With additional revenue we can make the investments needed to make invest in Ohio’s future.
